Why do we cry at happy endings?

Lies. There is no such thing as ‘tears of happiness.’ We cry not because we are upset, but because unpleasant feelings are stirred up inside us at the occasion of a happy ending.

We cry at the endings of happy movies because they conjure up an idealized world of kindness and love that we once, as children, believed possible. Children don’t usually cry because are not yet disillusioned about their own possibilities.

When we cry at weddings, graduations, bar/bat mitzvahs because of our own repressed anxieties about the past (why wasn’t my wedding as joyous?) insecurities about the present (why haven’t I found my true love like the bride and groom have?) and fear about the feature (how will I survive when my children leave the nest?).

So there you go, we cry for ourselves at happy endings. Thats actually really depressing.
